“THE BIG GAME”
AN AUTUMN DAY AT KINNICK STADIUM

Iowa is a friendly and welcoming place to live. Well, a least it is for 364 days of the year. There is one day each fall when the atmosphere changes. Although the in-state competition between Iowa and Iowa State Universities is quite serious, it is also a fun day of tailgating, cheering for your favorite team, enjoying the bands and the colorful crowd, and having a down-right great time in Iowa. The spirit of rivalry of this annual event is as “Iowa” as the corn we grow.
In this painting: Iowa and Iowa State Bands, Hawkeye Village, the student section is "passing" a person and a beachball, Hedlund dental office, the "Magic Bus", radio stations: KGRN, WHO and Jim Zabel with a friend, WMT, KXIC, KWPC, CORN, KOTH, KHAK, a Cambus and a Tri-State Tours bus, the "bubble," Klotz tennis courts, "Smiley" smiling, the crowd doing a "wave," an eagle, the University Heights Policeman giving a ticket, UI Rec Center bird problem, Santa Claus and the Easter Bunny, a man with a handle-bar mustache, senior citizens kissing, a pregnant lady in labor, City High, West High and Regina food stands, ETC!

“I wanted to do an Iowa painting in honor of my oldest daughter’s graduation from high school, and to celebrate my becoming a ‘‘University of Iowa Mom.’’ Homecoming, with all the festivities, is one of the best things about Iowa’s beautiful fall season. Nothing compares to the crisp fall air, the UI Marching and Alumni Bands, floats and fun, the crowds, fireworks, and maybe a full moon too. With the excitement of Iowa football at Kinnick Stadium, Iowa City is electrified at Homecoming!”

Untouched by the academic tradition and avant-garde movements, 20th-century primitive artists held to a simple interpretation of their world. We'll look at the Cahoons' stylistic forerunners, contemporaries and heirs.

The Cahoon Museum of American Art
is named in honor of the late contemporary primitive painter, Ralph Cahoon (1910-1982), and is housed in his former home and studio, a 1775 Georgian colonial building. The Museum's permanent collection ranges from folk art portraits by William Matthew Prior to marine paintings by James E. Buttersworth. Several special exhibitions are scheduled annually to complement the permanent collection. But the heart of the collection, and a continuing focus of the exhibition year, are the paintings of Ralph and Martha Cahoon. The Museum Store has reproductions of their work which are available for purchase.
