"IOWA ARTS FESTIVAL"
Iowa City, Iowa |
"Iowa Arts
Festival" was commissioned as a celebration of the BIG Iowa Arts Festival
held throughout downtown Iowa City every June. Artists, food vendors,
musicians of every kind, international "Global Village" and children's
activities highlight this fun four-day event. I was honored to be the

"THE GREENHOUSE" |
|
I originally painted this
scene when I was in college. Most of these plants are ones I have
"done-in" at one time or another. The pots mostly have survived my care. I
recently saw the old painting in my Mom's home and decided to re-do it.
In this painting: an original sheep "Chia Pet" I had in college,
shells, rocks and starfish from beaches we have enjoyed (including the
gift "egg" rock from Cape Cod I gave to my Mom inscribed "You’re a good
egg Love, Tom and Sue 1977"), a few bugs, my cactus from the Camelback Inn
in Scottsdale Arizona, the pineapple plant I bought in college at the
grocery store, brussel sprouts we grew on the farm, the chicken pot from
Mexico, my Norfolk pine Christmas tree, the two giant Alliums growing in
our backyard right now, my Grandma's little painted pitcher, and the
rabbit planter covered with moss. |

"HOLSTEIN HELPER"
On Ellendale Farm |
My childhood
memories are tied to our dairy farm in Campbell Hall, Orange County, NY.
The branches of the apple tree in our backyard were just out of reach for
the Holsteins. One cow in particular would see me sitting there on the
fence, and somehow we worked out this helpful situation. I do remember
being very afraid of the cow getting too close to me, since they were such
huge animals. My Dad is driving the old gray Ford tractor after we had
retrieved a newborn calf from the far end of the pasture. The mother cow
followed very closely behind us as I stayed in the cart with the baby. She
was angry that we picked up her new calf, and protective, and I thought
she was going to bite me. I was 8 yrs. old. This is an "autobiographical
painting."
In this painting: our dog "Tippy," my lost turtle, cows standing in the
pond, my pink Schwinn bicycle with the cool headlamp (from "Joe Fix-It's"
in Goshen where we all got our trikes and Schwinns), a lost cow tag,
Ellendale Farm mailbox with my Dad's name, the white fence I painted (my
first painting job) along Rt. 207 between Goshen and Campbell Hall, orange
tiger lilies, plenty of cow-pies, the train that ran through the back part
of the farm, rhubarb which grew under the apple tree, a nest of baby
snakes I ran through barefoot, and elephants which I imagined I saw in the
clouds. |

"NANTUCKET FLORAL" |
| As a child,
I was fortunate to have visited Cape Cod regularly with a friend and her
family. Her parents spoiled us terribly, taking us everywhere two
teenagers would want to go: all of the beaches, and trips on the ferry to
Nantucket. My friend’s Mom Hilda was an artist, working on her MFA after
she retired. She introduced me to the work of Cape Cod primitive artists
Ralph and Martha Cahoon. She painted, and I learned a great many things
from her. I bought my first set of acrylic paints at an art store on Cape
Cod. I was thrilled in Sept. of 2001 to be invited to have “The Last Ride
In” to be part of the “Apple Exhibit” at the Cahoon Museum of American Art
on Cape Cod. And also in 2003 "Homecoming Parade" was part of their
"Modern Primitives" exhibit. I painted "Nantucket Floral" in celebration
of many happy memories of Cape Cod. |

"WINTER FARM" |
We lived on
the farm for seven years early in our first years of marriage. The winters
were so very cold, dangerously cold, yet had a beauty all their own. I
have a photograph of Tom, wearing only his bathrobe and boots, running the
150 feet to retrieve the mail in -40 winter weather. I left him out of
this painting.
